Royal Canadian Numismatic Association Convention a place to be July 20, 2011
This past weekend William Brandimore (my co-author on the Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money) and I took a road trip to Windsor, Ontario to attend the annual convention of the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association.
For me it was a time wharp. I had attended three conventions in the late 1970s and early 1980s in Montreal, London and Toronto. There was much fellowship, nice tours, educational meetings, full bourse and exhibits.
This year, I got to meet a handful of the younger group I had first meet thrity years ago. Some were still exhibiting, others had become officers in the RCNA, and one, Paul Johnson, is now their Executive secretary. I and Bill exhibited, he won a third in World Coins, and I a first in World Paper Money.
I did not notice a “local” public draw, and certainly, not the bullion craze which exists at many US shows. I did notice folks buying all sorts of things from tokens and medals to Canadian type by dates.
There is a strong “social” presence at the show with a strong local support of the “hospitality” room, something long-gone at most US shows which have gone commerical.
I’ll certainly renew my membership, and although the 2012 the convetion will be in Calgary which is a long drive, the 2013 Winnipeg event seems much more practical.
