This week's featured coin is the early American Nickel 3 cent coin designed by James B. Longacre.
The coin was proposed in 1851 due to a decrease in postage rates from five cents to three, and to answer the public demand for a small-denomination, easy-to-handle coin.
The obverse shows a Coronet head facing left, with the date below. The reverse features a Roman numeral III within a wreath.
11,382,000 coins were minted with the 1865 date, and ranges in value from $10.00 in AG3 condition to $6,500 in Prof-65 condition.
