This week's featured coin is a commemorative piece honoring the 50th anniversary of Mount Rushmore. The monument is a massive presidential memorial carved into a mountain by sculptor and artist Gutzon Borglum near Keystone, South Dakota.

Mount Rushmore represents the first 150 years of the history of the United States of America with 60-foot sculptures of the heads of former United States presidents George Washington (17321799), Thomas Jefferson (17431826), Theodore Roosevelt (18581919), and Abraham Lincoln (18091865).

The entire memorial covers over 1,200 acres and is 5,725 feet above sea level. Over 2 million people visit the park every year.

The obverse of the coin features an image of the monument with the sun rising behind it, done by Marcel Jovine. The reverse shows a depiction of a buffalo under the words "Golden Anniversary". The reverse designer is T. James Ferrell.

172,754 coins were minted with a value of $20.00 in proof condition, and $21.50 in MS-65.
