This week's featured coin is a 10 dollar Liberian piece featuring an image of Sitting Bull. It is part of the 23 coin "Moments of Freedom" series.
Sitting Bull was a Lakota Souix leader, notable in American history for his role in the defeat of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer in the 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn. During heavy fighting, the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne alliance led by Sitting Bull was able to overwhelm and defeat Custer's 7th Calvary. Five companies were completely annihilated, and Custer himself was killed along with two of his brothers and his brother-in-law. The battle is considered the most famous of all that took place during the early American Indian Wars.
The obverse of the coin features the national arms of Liberia, while the reverse of the coin shows a multi-color portrait of Sitting Bull.
9,999 coins were minted, with a value of $10.00 in proof condition.
