Featured Coin
San Marnio
2 Lire
1983

This week's featured coin is a two lire circulation piece from the country of San Marino, with a subject that attempts to raise public awarness of the threat of nuclear war.

The 1980's saw an expansion in world production of nuclear arms, bringing public attention to the fact that even a small-scale, regional nuclear war has the potential to produce as many fatalities as all of World War II and disrupt the global climate for decades.

This coin carries interesting and artistic imagery reflecting this concern. The obverse of the coin shows a crowned shield above sprig and the words "Republica Di San Marino". The obverse shows two arms of different sizes reaching for the sky.

72,000 coins were minted and circulated, with a value of 0.20 cents US in XF condition.
