This week's featured coin is an interesting 1-1/2 Euro piece from Monnaie de Paris, commemorating the expansion of the European Union.
The EU is an economic and political union of 27 member countries created in 1993. In 2004, the EU grew greatly when the countries of Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary were admitted to the Union.
The obverse of the coin features the partial head of a woman and flags representing the individual member countries. The reverse shows a stylized map of the EU broken into puzzle pieces.
40,000 coins were minted with a value of $40.00 USD in proof condition.
