Royal Dutch Mint
5 Euro Silver
2013 Coin of the Year
The Royal Dutch Mint's 2011 5 Euro silver coin certainly earned its title of Most Innovative in the 2013 Coin of the Year Awards by Krause Publications. The coin's reverse bears a Quick Response Code that can be scanned with a smartphone for more information about the coin and a game. The coin's theme is the 100th anniversary of the building of the Mint's present facility.
An international panel of judges whittled down a group of 99 nominees – 2011-dated coins from around the world – to a group that consisted of one winner in each of 10 different categories. From there, the Royal Dutch Mint's high-tech offering emerged the winner as the 2013 Coin of the Year.
Dutch Mint Master Maarten Brouwer was presented the awards at a ceremony held Feb. 3 during the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany. In accepting the award, Maarten paid tribute to the coin's designer, Juan Sanchez-Castano.
