Top 5 Best Gifts for U.S. Coin Collectors|
December 07, 2012
This month, numismatic editors at Krause Publications have been selecting their top five favorite products. Any of them would make a great gift for collectors. This week, Editorial Director, Debbie Bradley, chooses her favorite, most entertaining and most useful coin reference books from the KP line-up.
2013 U.S. Coin Digest, 11th Edition
This is the one book every collector of U.S. coins needs. It lists every U.S. coin ever minted with detailed descriptions, color photographs and accurate coin prices. You can also buy the CD version.
2013 North American Coins & Prices, 22nd Edition
Coins of the United States, Canada and Mexico are featured in this comprehensive coin price guide. It’s like getting three books in one. Detailed listings, thousands of photographs and accurate pricing make it the go-to book for coin collectors. A well-worn copy is on every editor’s desk at Krause Publications. If you’d prefer the CD version, check it out here.
U.S. Coins & Currency, Warman’s Companion, 3rd Edition
I love it when a book delivers more than expected. This little dynamite gives a great introduction into collecting U.S. coins and paper money. It tells you about the different types of coins, what makes some coins more valuable than others and explains the differences between, for instance, a Trade dollar and a Peace dollar. Buy this book and you’ll learn a lot.
Strike it Rich with Pocket Change, 4th Edition
Who would have thought mistakes can make you money. But that’s exactly what happens when U.S. coin collectors find errors on coins made by the U.S. Mint. These are coins that pass through circulation, changing hands at the diner, gas station and convenience store. But the collector with a keen eye, and tips from this book, can spot the error coins that can be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. You’ll never look at the change in your pocket the same way again.
U.S. Coins Close Up
This is one of my favorite books because I’ve learned so much from it. Not only does author Robert Van Ryzin, editor of Coins magazine, tell how to spot a real U.S. coin from a fake coin, he tells great stories about U.S. coins. And the book is filled with large photos so you can see the details on the coins.
