By Lisa Bellavin
August 20, 2013

The National Bank of Lithuania will release a 50 litas commemorative coin dedicated to the 600th anniversary of the christening of the country’s Samogitia region. It will be launched September 6th, 2013.

Samogitia is one of the five ethnic regions of Lithuania. It has a long and storied cultural history, including it’s own distinct language. In 1413, the region became the last in Europe to be converted to Christianity, a significant event in the history of the European continent.

The coin will be struck of .925 silver in proof quality. The diameter is 38.61mm and the weight is 28.28g. The mintage of the coin is 3,000.

On the reverse of the coin, a symbolic fragment of christening is artistically depicted in the center, the inscriptions EMAITIJOS KRIKŠTAS (English translation – SAMOGITIA CHRISTENING) and 600 are arranged around the fragment.
