Innovative Maples Grace Canadian Coins|
August 21, 2013
The Royal Canadian Mint has released a 2013 coin celebrating the most familiar of its national symbols – the maple tree.
For approximately 200 years, the maple leaf symbol has been associated specifically with Canada and Canadians. In 1965, the maple leaf became the centerpiece of Canada’s most important national emblem - the Canadian flag. On April 25, 1996, the Deputy Registrar of Canada proclaimed the maple tree the country’s official arboreal emblem, citing the maple leaf’s historical role as a symbol of national identity, the important part the maple has played in the country’s historical and commercial development, its aesthetic importance to Canadians, and the tree’s role as an important environmentally sustainable economic resource.
The Canadian Maple Canopy coin is the first in a new series showcasing Canada’s majestic maple trees from unique perspectives in each season. The first coin shows the trees in spring through a vibrant green colorized and engraved depiction of the forest from underneath.
Canadian artist Emily Damstra presents the classic Canadian maple from the novel perspective of being at the bottom of the tree. The textural and tonal design of the trunk, branches and leaves help reinforce the image’s sense of height and depth.
The tree fills the entire reverse, also engraved with the word “CANADA,” the date “2013” and the face value of “20 DOLLARS.”
