Morgan Silver Dollars Begin Year Well|
January 14, 2014
The Morgan dollar market remains active with good demand continuing across the board. The 1878 issues again lead the parade in Mint State with the Carson City issue approaching $500 in MS-63. The 1878-S issue is in unusually strong demand from AU through MS-63. The 1887-O is now at $175 in MS-63 and 1891 Philadelphia coins are in strong demand in AU-50 through MS-63. The 1894-O in EF-40 has now reached the $100 mark. What is interesting here and I think especially important is that several of these are not the normal high flyers but are more those considered to be the core of the market. It is kind of like, “oh yeah, they’re good but what about the keys?” Personally, I think this strength in the core values of Morgans bodes well for this year.
Peace dollars are steady but show no significant changes other that those circulated issues that track their silver value.
Proof sets have remained steady recently with noticeable upward movement in the 1995 silver set and the 2008 quarter set. Mint sets are also steady but there is some profit-taking in the 1956 and 1958 issues, which are lower for the first time in a year.
After attempting a run to $1,250 a troy ounce, gold faltered on a stronger than expected jobs report and fears of deflation in the eurozone. This week we have gold still up 1 percent from our last report and platinum really shining, up 2 percent, and now at a ratio of 1.15 to 1 versus gold. The noble metal seems to be recovering its long-term status as the leader of the pack. Silver on the other hand now at 63 to 1 versus gold has declined nearly 2 percent.
