It is the one bit of advice given by veteran numismatists: Buy the book before you buy the coin.

To help with that endeavor, we preview numismatic books offered by Krause Publications in the first half of the year.

They include world and U.S. coin and paper money books that have become the backbone of the collecting hobby, as well as a new book that focuses on the Coin of the Year program sponsored by World Coin News and Krause Publications.

The new year kicked off with a new edition of the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money Specialized Issues, 12th Edition.

The book has been three years in the making. The latest numismatic book release from KP features world bank notes of a specialized nature – notes issued by states, municipalities and private companies in addition to nationally issued Foreign Exchange Certificates and military-use currency.

Edited by George S. Cuhaj, the 1,296 book contains 12,000 detailed illustrations and more than 27,500 note varieties listed and priced in up to three grades of condition.

The Standard Catalog of World Paper Money Specialized Issues is available as a book or CD from shopnumismaster.com. Retail price is $90 for the book and $59.99 for the CD.

The new year brings a spring lineup that opens with the 2015 Standard Catalog of World Paper Money, Modern Issues, 20th Edition. A network of more than 80 international paper money collectors and dealers work with editor Cuhaj to ensure that the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money, Modern Issues, is the most comprehensive resource available for proper identification, description and valuation of modern world bank notes. All circulating paper bank notes worldwide are included in this one-of-a-kind catalog.

The 20th edition is available April 11 at shopnumismaster.com and bookstores nationwide. The retail price for the 1,160-page book is $70.

The 2015 U.S. Coin Digest, 13th Edition, The Complete Guide to Current Market Values debuts May 1. David C. Harper is editor and Harry Miller is market analyst.

U.S. Coin Digest features nearly 2,000 high-quality images for easy coin identification. The hardcover, concealed wire-o binding allows the book to open and lay flat on a table, creating the perfect hands-free tool for researching and pricing.

There is simply no better guide to U.S. coins on the market. Ideal for the beginning or seasoned collector, this fully illustrated, comprehensive color guide in a hardcover, lay-flat, easy-to-use format covers all U.S. coin issues.

2015 U.S. Coin Digest is a complete reference that includes all circulating and non-circulating coins, from early American token coinage to modern commemorative issues of the 21st century. It is an ideal product for readers looking for a handy, portable price guide. The 320-page color book retails for $17.99.

Coins of superior craftsmanship and design are celebrated in Coin of the Year – Celebrating Three Decades of the Best in Coin Design and Craftsmanship by Donald Scarinci.
