Queen receives 'Mandela's Gold'

A Nelson Mandela gold medallion was given to Queen Elizabeth II in May while she visited the Kirstenbosch booth at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show in the United Kingdom.

The medal was given by Alan Demby, chairman of the South African Gold Coin Exchange and its retail arm, the ScoinShop.

Kirstenbosch is South Africa’s national botanical garden, which Demby has sponsored for the past four years.

Reverse of the medal depicts the Strelitzia Reginae flower, also known as “Mandela’s Gold,” renamed in honor of the late South African president.

The Mint of Norway produced the medallion. It features a Kirstenbosch logo mintmark.
