Van Ryzin receives NLG’s Clemy
By Maggie Judkins
August 15, 2017

The 2017 Numismatic Literary Guild Bash, held Aug. 3 in conjunction with the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money in Denver, was a big night for Robert R. Van Ryzin.

Van Ryzin, editor of Bank Note Reporter and Coins magazine, sister publications of Numismatic News, took home four NLG awards, one of them being the guild’s highest honor: The Clemy.

According to the guild, The Clemy is bestowed upon an “NLG member in recognition of writing skill, dedication to numismatics, sense of humor and dedication to the Numismatic Literary Guild.”

Candidates are nominated by submissions from the board to the year prior’s winner, who makes the final decision.

Mark Borckardt, 2016 Clemy winner, presented this year’s award to Van Ryzin.

Borckardt noted how fitting it is that Van Ryzin, who hails from Krause Publications, Iola, Wis., became a member of the NLG in 1976, the same year that Chet Krause received the Clemy Award.

“Joining the Numismatic Literary Guild many years ago was one of my best decisions,” said Van Ryzin. “I greatly appreciate the NLG awards I received at this year’s Bash, not the least of these was The Clemy. It is truly an honor to have my name added to the august group of prior winners, and I thank the NLG and last year’s Clemy winner, Mark Borckardt, for selecting me and presenting the award.”

In the Numismatic Newspapers category, Van Ryzin won Best Paper Money Article for “Notes Forever Tied to Wild Bunch: Pinkertons Used Serial Numbers to Track Rail Heist Loot,” appearing in Bank Note Reporter. Van Ryzin and BNR also took home Best Issue honors for the April 2017 issue.

Finally, Van Ryzin’s “Notes Forever Tied to Wild Bunch” article earned the James L. Miller Memorial Award that, according to the NLG, “recognizes the best numismatic article to appear in any medium, including both numismatic and non-numismatic magazines, newspapers and Internet Web sites.”

“Thanks also to the NLG and its board of directors for the organization’s continuing work honoring those in and outside the hobby who help spread the vital knowledge all collectors in our field rely and depend on,” said Van Ryzin.

Numismatic News Editor David C. Harper won the award for Best Internet Blog for “The Buzz.” It is the third time Harper’s blog has brought home the award.

Numismatic News also took honors in the Best Spot News Story in a Numismatic Newspaper for “Doubled-Die 2015 Cent Identified” by Ken Potter and in the Best Token and Medal Article in a Numismatic Newspaper for “Mint Begins Steam Coinage in 1836” by R.W. Julian.
