Hungary has won the 2009 People's Choice Award, one of the awards given by Numismatic News' sister publication, World Coin News, in its annual Coin of the Year competition.

Online voting concluded Jan. 4, 2009, after beginning the prior November. It is the one award in the Coin of the Year family that is chosen by an online vote of collectors worldwide. The other winners, which will be announced in coming weeks, are selected by an international panel of judges.

The award will be given Feb. 7 at the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany.

The winning Hungarian coin is a 2007-dated sterling silver piece from the Hungarian Castle series. It depicts Gyula Castle on the reverse and has a stylized wall with tower from the castle and the 5,000-forint denomination prominently featured on the obverse.

The coin is silver dollar sized at 38.61mm and it weighs not quite a troy ounce at 31.46 grams.

Designer is Gyorgy Kiss. The coin was struck in proof and uncirculated versions.

Online voters selected the coin from a field of 15. The other contenders came from Austria, two mints in Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Poland, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The People's Choice Award was first given in 2008. It also was won by Hungary.
