Mint Production Off to Slow Start

Coin production at the U.S. Mint got off to a weak start to the year in January when little more than half a billion coins were struck.

If production continues at the same rate for the next 11 months, overall production would drop to fewer than 6.2 billion coins from over 10.1 billion in 2008.

Some surprisingly low numbers were recorded for nickels at the Philadelphia Mint where only 3,360,000 were struck.

The new Native American dollar saw only 700,000 coined in Denver.

Quarter production at the pace set in January would not even hit 900 million by year end, compared to over 2.5 billion struck in 2008.

Naturally, one month does not tell the story for an entire year, but for collectors used to counting by the billions, January's numbers seem surprisingly low.

I know the mint lists the above production figures you have, but I know the 2008 golden dollars were listed @ about 1.7 mil. until the end of the year & then jumped way up. Was the jump due to the 2009 golden dollars being produced in 2008 (as I have been told) & listed under the 2008 production figures? If so, how are we going to know what the production figures are for each year, by the date on the coin (2008 x amount & 2009 x amount)? I hope I get a reply. Thank you

I definately think Ikew has hit the nail on the head because in fact the mintage up until about the middle of January was published as 1.82 million Golden (SAC) dollars and then it skyrocketed to an unbelieveable level. Where as the new Native American/Sac dollars were available in the 250 & 500 coin direct purchase very early in January the latest figure for 2008 must include the 2009 coins. If you take the number of rolls and bags sold the mintage totals calculate out to be 1,292,800 for Philly and 1,243,575 for Denver. These figures do not include Proof or satin finish coins.

The same thing happened in 2007-2008. In December 2007, the annual total for dollars and half dollars jumped significantly. In March 2008, the last-minute dollars and halves were belatedly removed from the 2007 totals and added to the 2008 totals.
