High Relief Silver Marks Marathon
 | By World Coin News November 16, 2009 |

The Perth Mint has issued a high relief silver proof coin to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of Pheidippides’ 25-mile run to Athens with news of the Greek army’s historic triumph at the Battle of Marathon. It became available Nov. 3.
Pheidippides’ long-distance achievement inspired the introduction of Olympic marathon running in 1896.
The proof quality coin is 6 mm thick, consists of 1 ounce of 99.9 percent pure silver and is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu. Its mintage is limited to just 5,000.
The coin’s high relief reverse portrays Pheidippides’ arrival in Athens at the end of his famous run, where legend suggests he proclaimed victory over Persia with the word “nenikhkamen” (we have won) before expiring. In addition to The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark, the design incorporates a scroll with the inscription “Nenikhkamen.”
The coin’s obverse depicts the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the 2010 date. For more information, or to order, visit www.perthmint.com.au or e-mail info@perthmint.com.au.
