On Jan. 6 the Royal Canadian Mint released its first new collector coins and gift products of the year, and it chose the celebration of the Canadian Navy’s centennial as the theme of its 2010 silver dollar.

Canada’s emergence as a modern nation took a leap forward when Canada’s Navy was founded through the adoption into law of the Naval Service Act on May 4, 1910. The light cruiser HMCS Rainbow arrived at Esquimalt, British Columbia, later that year to serve as the first unit of Canada’s new navy.

Designed by Nova Scotia artist Yves Bérubé, a Quebec native and member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists, this double-dated sterling silver dollar coin features the bold image of HMCS Sackville, one of 122 Flower Class Corvettes in operation by the end of World War II, when Canada boasted the third largest navy in the world. The image is surrounded by the Canadian Navy’s motto, “Ready Aye Ready/Prêt Oui Prêt,” engraved in Morse code.

Limited to a mintage of 50,000, the 2010 proof silver dollar is available for $47.95 CDN. The BU version of this coin retails for $39.95 CDN and is limited to a mintage of 30,000.

The same design is reproduced on a selectively gold-plated proof dollar coin, which is exclusive to the Mint’s 2010 Proof Set. Just 55,000 sets, with a suggested retail price of $99.95 CDN, are available worldwide.

To view and purchase the mint’s entire line of 2010 products, call (800) 267-1871 in Canada or (800) 268-6468 in the U.S., or visit Web site www.mint.ca. The products are also available through its global network of dealers and distributors.
